Pick-Up Braids
- Braids are located on the guide/guide flag and provide the method of transferring the power delivered through the track rails to the motor of the car. They are subject to wear and must be replaced when necessary to provide the car with reliable and dependable performance.
Pick-Up Braid Types:
- Standard: These are a long lasting copper braid. These are standard factory equipment on each car.
- Super Racing: These are a softer competition braid that improves contact with the track rails.
Pick-Up Guide Maintenance
- Pick-up braids should be visually inspected before using the vehicle. If the braids are not in good condition, the car will not perform as normal. Bad braids cause the car to stop and start, and stop completely.
- Braids should be kept clean and dry for dependable performance.
- You can create better braid flexibility and conduction by using Voodoo drops. Voodoo drops are applied directly on the braid.
Replacing Pick-Up Braids
- When replacing the pick-up braids, remove the new braids from the package and check that each braid is folded at one end. The folded end is the top end of the braid. Pass the top end through the opening in the guide/guide flag. This fold will act as a stop so the braid does not slide or fall off the guide.
- The size of the braid should be as long as the guide, and no longer.
- To provide better contact with the track rails, fold the end of the braid down so it lays flat to the guide, pointing back to rear of the car. You can create a larger braid/track rail contact area by fraying the end of the braid slightly with a needle to create a wider contact area. A wider contact area provides greater electrical contact and pick up.
Guides or Guide Flags
These are located between the front wheels of the car and the front of the chassis. Guides allow the car to run on the track, as they are the meeting point between the car and the track lane. The pick-up braids are also located on the guide. The pick-up braids deliver the electric current that runs through the rails of the lane to the car’s motor
Guide/Guide Flag Types:
-
Standard: Keeps the car in contact with the track lane. They are suitable for low ride heights and for running at high speed.
-
Suspension Guide: These are for uneven and multipurpose tracks. Includes a small spring-based shock-absorber system that guarantees contact between the guide, braids and track.
-
Steering Guide: Fitted to all single seat cars (F-1/Indy/Open Wheel). Includes a small hook that transfers guide movement to the front axle. When the guide is turned, the front wheels follow in the same direction.
-
Drop Down ProArm Guide: Mounted on rally vehicles. These are designed to ensure enough ride height when the vehicle overcomes obstacles (boulder, etc.) so that the braids do not come away from the track and lose contact. Includes a rocking area at one end and a suspension guide at the opposite end.
